If you could have a revolving closet full of the latest luxury designers but only pay a fraction of the retail value, would you buy?
The Rotation, a subscription service that offers streetwear clothing ranging from Rhude to Gucci, is one of the few services to offer a “Rent the Runway” concept for men (and anyone who prefers men’s clothing). Seeking to help guys quench the guilt of spending while staying on top of the latest trends, founders Zach Podbela and Barron Roth looked at whether to fill a major gap in the market. After launching a beta test of The Rotation, the co-owners received a seed investment, closing their first round of funding just before the novel coronavirus made its mark.
Today, The Rotation fills the void for today’s online shopper by allowing us to test out the best names in luxury streetwear designers before committing to a big purchase. I tested the service myself for the purpose of writing this review, and below you’ll find an honest take on what to expect, issues that still need to be addressed, and overall usage of the service.
How rotation works
Rotation offers three subscription options. You can get two items at a time for $ 89, three items for $ 129, and four items for $ 159.
You will get unlimited swaps throughout the month and you won’t have to resend them all at once. This means that if you rent a coat and a t-shirt, you can return the t-shirt after one use and keep the coat for as long as you are registered for the service.
Shipping costs are covered, so all you need to do is schedule a pickup or drop off the package for returns. And, if you want to keep an item, The Rotation is offering a 5% discount on your purchase every month you have an item. A good deal, isn’t it?
The rotation also ensures that returns go through a wet or dry cleaning routine, finalized by a process of steaming at temperatures above 248 degrees to prevent any traces of COVID-19 on its items (excluding leathers, imitation leathers and outerwear).
What types of clothing to expect
So far, I’ve been through three clothing expeditions from The Rotation, so I’ve been able to check out multiple seasons of styles.
The designer and product catalog has gone from summer options of shorts and t-shirts to a more fall-centric stock of sweatshirts, pants and knitwear. I am always able to find styles that match the season and my interest in black designers such as Heron Preston and Fear of God. Other well-known designers and brands such as Carhartt, APC, John Elliott and Noah frequently draw my attention to the app as well.
I also like that I can filter by my height and all of the most recent additions (which are added every two weeks) are shown at the top of the page.
Shipments generally arrive quickly, usually within three business days, and the packaging is done carefully. Every item I unpacked appeared like new, seemingly never worn, and still odor and stain free. There are hardly any folds.
